CPS? Say what?

I have seen mentioned (quite often) that people would have never figured out what this blog was all about just by the name…totally doesn’t sound "scrappy" or "crafty". Well, on the eve of our first anniversary I thought that I would take a minute to explain. (since the designers say I can’t reveal the new team members until tomorrow).

After nearly 10 years of scrapbooking I tried cardmaking and I quickly realized I really like cardmaking more than scrapbooking *gasp* For me, it was so much easier to be creative without the limits of a photo and I still got to play with the same supplies. I have always liked sketches for scrapbooking. I am a slow scrapper, I sit and arrange and rearrange things and still end up with a plain and simple page. So, sketches seem to reduce the time it takes to plan a page (but they still end up plain and simple *shrug*). Although popular for scrapbooking, I looked around I didn’t see many sketches for cards. My original idea was to do an actual book with sketches and ideas. That didn’t seem possible (at the time) so I thought, hey maybe I can start a blog and at least share it with my online friends. I asked a few of my cardmaking friends (and a few of my soon to be friends) if they would be interested in helping me out and surprisingly they said yes (now I think they may have their doubts).

I set it all up and made the first sketches. Now, we needed a name, a theme (yeah, I’m weird like that). I started with sort of a play book or a sports type theme…not working. So one night I was chatting with my friend Jamie. I was telling her my idea and about the awesome Page Maps site for scrapbookers (one of the few sketch sites at the time) and how I wanted to do something like that in a blog form designed for card makers. Something featuring just cards. Of course if you know Jamie you know her humor. So she replies…ok, so I guess you want to be the GPS of cardmaking/sketches…you know, because a GPS is way better than a map. Of course she was being sarcastic but my wheels starting turning. I starting thinking…Global Positions System (aka GPS)….hmm…well, these designs really are a Positioning System…showing how to “position” the elements of a card….OH! a CARD positioning system (CPS) So, alas, thanks to Jamie and her sarcasm we became Card Positioning Systems!! (Proof that even though you are joking you never know when I might just take you seriously)

Now that being said, no, we will never be “better than a map”. I have no desire to be better than anyone. My desire is to make CPS a “guide” to (hopefully) inspire others in their creative journey, reduce the planning and make the trip even more enjoyable. I have seen numerous designs by the CPS readers that combine the CPS card sketches with other challenges. Which is proof that creativity comes can from many sources and combinations of ideas. Sometimes the designs here even go off on a path of their own and end up nothing like the sketch…which is great too! It’s all about the creative journey and making it yours.

So, if you made it to the end of my rambling I want to say thanks to each of you for your great support and for letting CPS be a part of your creative journey over the last year!!
